SAN JUAN RIVER FISHING REPORTS ARCHIVE - 2007 June 2007 Fishing Report June 22 - Summer is officially here - along with high temperatures in the afternoon, but it is cool out on the water. Fishing is still good using big terrestrial patterns on top. Parachute ants in sizes 12 and 14 are picking up a lot of fish as are G's Cedar Beetles in 14 and 16. For nymphing - size 24 and 26 grey thread midge pupae have been my choice in the mornings, but I often tie on a brown fluff baetis as my upper fly and pick up a few fish on that as well. Brown fluff baetis in 20 and 22 have been the go-to fly in the afternoons, especially from Three Island run and down through Simon Canyon area. Texas Hole has been producing some great baetis hatches in the afternoon with the trout falling for chocolate foam wings and fluff baetis. The most productive leader length seems to be 5 to 6 feet. Size 4 or 6 split shot seems to keep the rig in the strike zone. Fishing in the catch and release area below the dam has been great for wade fishermen. Folks fishing up there are picking up some really nice fish on 24 and 26 midge pupae patterns as well as on midge cluster dry patterns. It's a good time to be on the water! June 26 - The caddis are poppin!! They have been out in the afternoons and evenings from just below the gravel pit all the way down to the Hammond diversion. June 28 - The caddis have been coming off late in the afternoon and in the evening. Quite a few of the guides have been floating the lower section and are reporting pretty good catches. Often they are seeing caddis, but no fish rising to them earlier in the day. Late in the day, fish are rising to artificials when no real bugs are on the water - go figure. May 2007 Fishing Report Fishing has been absolutely phenominal for the last four weeks. This year's high water period provided some spectacular 20+ fish days. The water is down now, but still flowing at 1300 cfs. Flows could possibly stay over 1000 for a while as Navajo Reservoir is full and the runoff just keeps coming. Since the drop from 5000 to 1300, dry-fly fishing has been great. Trout are hungrily taking ants, beetles, and stimulators. Nymph fishing has been fantastic as well. Expect caddis hatches to start somtime within the next two weeks - it's going to be fun!! Yep - Dry flies. Anglers have been picking up some nice trout in the upper river around Cable Hole using parachute adams and midge imitations. Through the braids, Texas Hole, and down to Beatis Bend, fish are hitting ants, beetles, and stimulators. A few caddis are starting to come off in the lower river and the hatch should start moving up river soon! May 9, 2007 Fishing Report Don't have a ton of time today but wanted to add a quick report from the high water. River cleared out fast and fishing is RED HOT you all know that in the past 10 years of doing fishing reports I dont say RED HOT much, after all nothing worse then puting your foot in your mouth with clients. Had a half day trip today, wade all I did for 4 hours was net fish, thats the kind of fishing we are having right now. If you can swing the time for a float and want to see the river at higher flows DO IT!!!!!!! I will post more once the flows start to drop but look out for the BEST FISHING OF THE YEAR starting about the 16th on the drop in flows!!! And remember the lower river caddis are going to be early this year like late may!!!! Have a great summer ! April 1-21, 2007 Fishing Report OK, The river is still off color but looking a little better this week and the fishing was HOT the last 2 days on the river (4-20-21). The main deal now is the amount of moss in the river, but if you clean your flies every cash fishing has been great. Weather today (21) was just what you look for in the spring, cloudy and looks likee rain all day but never does. HUGE baetis and midge hatch today and a great number of fish on top, but between the moss and the wind in the after noon was not even an option to fish dry.. Fish are still eating red, but gray midges and about any baetis pattern worked the last 2 days. Keep you eye out for the hatches to just get stronger and the fishing better as we get close to high water on the 30th! And remember the great fishing in the higher flows!!! See you all on the river soon, I will be posting a few reports about the high flow fishing next week! Have a great summer of wonderful fishing on the San Juan! March 19-25, 2007 Fishing Report Fishing is really turning on after a little bit of a slow week. Water is still off color, dont think we are going to see clear water until higher flows at this rate, but it might change quick?? Wade fishing has been a little slow the last week but we have had guide find a few sweet spots here and there on the river in the areas above Thole. Float fishing was a little show mid day last week, but the first big baetis hatches started yesterday (3-24) as well as monster midge hatch and yesterday and today the fish were really looking for real bugs for a change. Plan on a junk bite in the early am until about 11 then the fish are getting on baetis and midges. Eggs and anything red have been key in the am then 11:00 look to change to choc foam wings and rs2 with brown midges as droppers. Midges have been bigger so far this spring 20-22 have been my best bugs. Beatis 24-20 and I did see a mess of 18(ish) size bugs yesterday but get ready for that 24 spring beatis soon after the larger flies. Get ready for the killer spring fishing we are know for and pack the junk box and baetis box! Have a great spring on the river hope to see all of you with bent rods soon! February 1-16, 2007 Fishing ReportFishing has been great throughtout this winter. Weather has been another story, but seems to have settled down with temps in the 40'5 and 50's the last week. Water clarity seems to be getting better day by day this last week. Great spring dry fly fishing should be just around the corner! Nymph fishing - the deep slow pools has remained the most productive all winter, but fish seem to be sliding into the heads of pools looking for insects. Midges and beatis have been far more productive than junk the last week, but still getting the occational fish to eat eggs and worms. I have been doing better fishing pheasant tails size 20 and 22 and black, olive or grey midges size 20-24 depending on what the fish are in mood for. Fishing near the dam has continued to be very productive. Fish are grouped up in pods. Once you find one you are more than likely to find several in the same area. Seems like the fish aren't really all that spread out, deep water is the key, but don't forget to look for fish stacking in the dropoffs when the bugs are hatching best from about 11-2. Texas hole down has remained more of a float fishery. Wade fishing has not been terribly productive because these fish key more on beatis, and beatis hatches have been a little slow. Hatches in this section of the river should increase substantially over the next few weeks. Look for midge and beatis hatches to just get stronger as we get into the warmer weather of spring. Pack along a good assortment of midges, beatis, eggs and worms, and you should have everything you need. Enjoy the great fishing spring has to offer. Tight lines! - Chris January 1-22, 2007 Fishing ReportWinter has been good to the state of NM this year for the first time in a LONG time! We have been blessed in the 4-corners area missing most of the snow that has been hitting NM and S. CO. We have had our fair share and even had to get out my shovel this year and went sledding with my son last week! Over all we have had lots of sun and clam days! Fishing has been great this last few week with most people hiding out at home us local boys have had the run of the place. River is off color from turnover but the fish dont seem to mind and with the limited number of people fishing junk is still working great! Floats have been the way to go most days but was out on a guided trip 2 days ago and fishing on foot was wonderful and dont think we saw more the 1-2 people all day!!! Sight fishing is OK in the real shallow water but fishing the bigger slower pools has been the way to go! Midges behind worms or eggs all this last 2 weeks since the water got a little off color! Buggers and other odd junk has been also working very well. I was in the boat fishing deep a few days back and man did the fish want a beadhead bugger in Olive not sure why never have really done well on this pattern but the fish pounded it all day from T-hole down! Fished it on the wade I did the other day as well worked great in deep pools but not as good as on the float . Winter is such a fun time because you can surprise yourself with new patterns and new areas! Not much in the way of dry action but did see a few fish on the float looking up and got 2 to eat a dry but really just lucky I think! Dont let the weather reports for the rest of the state get you down it has been great here almost all winter! Call me anytime for a weather report and to check out our winter lodging only rates! Happy new year and hope to see you all on the water soon! Chris Guikema - Sanjuanworm Archive of Fishing Reports from Previous Years 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004 | 2003 | 2002
