COLORADO FISHING
Upper
San Juan East and West forks: The upper San Juan is not at ALL like the San
Juan in New Mexico. This unspoiled river starts just miles above where we will be fishing.
The 10,000-foot peaks that are still packed with snow in July feed this intimate river on
its way to the Navajo Reservoir and then the Tail water section of the San Juan that
everyone knows. This is a wonderful river to fish for a day or a week. The river
will fish well all summer and fall (if there is a good snow pack) and offers a great day
of dry fly action to anyone who is up for the adventure. We have access to several section
of Forrest service land along this river all a little over a hour north of the Lodge and
less then 1 hour from Pagosa Springs. Dry fly only is the general rule on this river, but
a beadhead or a streamer run through the deep pools might produce a real lunker. Most fish
are 8-15" but fish in the 20" class are taken all summer. The East and West
forks of the San Juan are the largest of the rivers that we guide in the Pagosa area and
are also freestone rivers (no dam); pocket water, deep crystal clear pools and small
rapids are the best holding water for the trout here. Stoneflies, caddis and baetis make
up a big portion of the fishes diet here but hoppers, streamers and other terrestrial
patterns also all hunt up fish! The upper San Juan is truly solitary angling at its best
and well worth the trip! Leave the office at home and come see the wonders of Southwestern
Colorado and get away from it all! This river system is the farthest form our lodge on the
San Juan but worth the drive, or a GREAT choice for people staying in Pagosa Springs or
even Durango.
